J-B Clesinger "Zingara, Danseuse Napolitaine" Period Bronze
Jean-Baptiste (dit Auguste) Clesinger 1814-1883 was a sculptor of note who for some years flourished in Rome although a native of France. This is a large, lively and erotic study of a young woman dancing and playing the tambourine.
He came from an artistic background. A previous work was a considerable "success de scandale" . Its eroticism caused a sensation. It was evidently very erotic indeed and based on a courtesan Apollinie Sabatier. Zingara, pleasingly louche with shapely exposed breasts, shows him taking the eroticism a step further. It doesn't seem to have harmed his career; he goes on to be an officer of the Legion d' honour
This large example is recorded in Berman (4179). Ours is 41 inches tall.
