This is a 19th century copy of the celebrated Borghese Gladiator original. Part of the Grand Tour for British Aristocrats on culture bent, this item was much copied with various results.
The original is by Agasias and dates from around 100 BC. More recently it was sold to Napoleon and now may be viewed in the Louvre. Various reductions can be seen in great houses.
