In about the middle of the 18th century there was a period when Exuberance began to eclipse the understated quality so celebrated in English furniture . From France came the fashionable Chinoiseirie look. Since few people had been to China they copied from what they knew, lacquer panels , blue and white porcelain and made up fancifully what they didn't know. Mirrors were often carved with Ho Ho birds based loosely on oriental mythology. They were seen as auspicious, with long necks and legs , wings and tail feathers. These brackets are, we think, 19th century examples of the style. They are probably French, verso is a French storage label,"Le Garde Meuble..."
