Large Pair of German Rococco Style Porcelain Two-Light Sconces
This antique pair is hard paste, German and painted in the palette of Meissen but unmarked , the pink and blue is entirely characteristic of Meissen of the third quarter of the 19th century. (it might also conceivably be by Sitzendorf.) Each is vigorously modelled with acanthus and gilt. The two sinuous arms support a pair of leafy bobeches and leaf-form drip pans. Very unusually each is painted with martial scenes depicting victorious German cavalry , with a wounded Austrian the soldier in the foreground. The allusion is perhaps to the Seven Years war.
They are large, in mainly good condition and quite rare with this painting in reserve which makes a refreshing change from flowers and rosy-bottomed cherubs
They are not wired for electricity (though we can do this) which suggests that we have a truly antique pair. One has a British Antique Dealers Association round sticker on the painting which we have not tried to remove. There are firing cracks but only visible verso
