Judaica: An Antique American Decalogue

This unusual pediment is from the top of an ark, it is original down to the pegs that would attach it except a very minor refreshing of the blue paint.  The tablets are carved in relief on a matted ground. The carver knew his business and gave the words and numbers due emphasis by so doing. There are a few others known in a variety of sizes. with variations of the foliage…some without the crown. 

The Lions are well-carved. It would be interesting to find out who the carver was. It is a sophisticated piece of work. The Lions look rather like fair-ground figures and it would be interesting to tie them to a particular carver.
