These go flat to the wall but can also be reunited in the round as in the photo of the cinema interior. They came from the Palace Theatre in Montreal built in 1920. The architect was Howard Crane of Detroit. The style is a pastiche of Adam, Orientalist, leafiness and a general exoticness. Like a movie set, the theatre offered a chance to ordinary people for an inexpensive evening out in fantasy surroundings. Fred and Ginger would glide effortlessly down similar stairs fifteen years later but with sound. It is perhaps a style sui generis, in its carefree looting of other styles it becomes something uniquely its own.

Ours may have been mounted on a wall as half -round, hence pilasters. They can be returned to roundness quite easily , or left in their current form . In either presentation they provide a stylish reminder of a bygone age.
