An imposing pair of Louis XVI style giltwood torchieres, each with ebonized surface supported by a tall tripod base worked with scrolling acanthus, garlands and with a serpent coiled about a tapering central pedestal, on three toupie feet.
Giltwood torchiere became popular in Versailles and Paris during the first decades of the reign of Louis XIV and have remained so until the present day. They support lighting and sculpture and add distinction and grace to any room setting. This pair is boldly designed and subtly executed. They have been sympathetically regilded and restored to their former elegance.
