Made towards the end of the 18th century, its original purpose was to increase and decrease the amount of light, for reading, embroidery and suchlike, by raising and lowering the pedestal, which moved the candle up and down. This particular example is particularly favoured by skillful and delicate turning to both base and pedestal and by turned bone rings and screw. It also has a lead plate screwed to the base to provide greater stability. It is a work of art in itself. It is not easy to find one of these of this quality although lesser examples are available.
It has numerous potentially less inflammatory uses.
The bone bandings are segmented and complete but are not continuous, there is a small chip under the edge of the round top, and two minor chips to the round base. The first is only visible when looked at upside down.
