This pair of stools are copies of ones in a private collection. Jean Palardy, in his celebrated "The Early Furniture of French Canada". lists the original (plate 246).
His, he describes as a Flemish stool. It is robustly made with a hole cut for a handle and with Gothic style shaped panels.. They feature in the book since they were part of the Costello collection and they have gone on to being praised for their practical and aesthetic qualities
