A Mid 17th. Century Flemish Antwerp Cabinet On Stand, enclosing eight drawers, ebonized and with marquetry and scarlet drawer fronts; the back and sides set with geometric panels ebonized and bone. the edges boldly inlaid with bone and ebonized alternating stringing. The turned base continues the motif. This cabinet has much in common with Spanish furniture since Spain occupied the low countries for a long time.
“Certain Flemish tortoiseshell cabinets were highlighted with a particular lacquer after the Italian scagliola, now called lacquer marquetry. The technique consists of applying a coloured substance to patterns engraved into the wood. This substance is a lacquer made from a blend of bees' wax and tiny fragments of marble onto which mother of pearl is glued. (T. Wolvesperges, Le meuble en Belgique)”
