Antique French Chandelier, Bronze & Frosted Glass, Art Nouveau, 1880
This a large imposing chandelier, it features a combination of classic gas-lighting aesthetics mixed with fluid organic accents characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. The prominent lower centerpiece features a large frosted glass bowl/dome detailed with textured patterns, the upper section outfitted with specialized flame-style frosted glass shades on the main vertical pillars alongside ruffled floral/tulip down-shades on the outer scrolling arms. The long central brass tube suggest that it might have been originally a gasolier. The main structure is a chiseled solid brass and gilt bronze frame decorated with stylized scrollwork and organic vines. The scrolling arms are applied with stylised acanthus. The bronze bands lions masks, and ornaments are of excellent quality. This is very much from the Belle Époque period, and is a highly ornate, antique French Bell Époque style bronze chandelier from the latter half of the 19th century, engineered during the transition era between gaslight and early domestic electricity.
