This is a high-quality example of American craftsmanship, it is very heavy for its size. The shape is reminiscent of an ancient shield, with central boss and a broad flange at the rim. It is suspended by four chains with chunky rectangular links each hanging from a heavy bronze hook.
It is difficult to date but the martele {hammered) finish in red bronze suggests the end of the 19th century, there was a taste then for this type of finish, often in silver by Gorham.
These are reputed to have hung in a bank in Ottawa at the turn of the century.

The indirect light is thrown upwards from this fixture, the inside bowl has been repainted with a reflective paint to increase the efficiency of the overall projected light.

Curiously we could also see these working well in a Arts & Crafts themed room. Three available
