Made in 1854 by the Barnard Brothers, based on a classical style, this jug is about as interesting as such a piece could possibly be. The pear-shaped ovoid body is centered by a circular panel crested with a goat and the motto "Che Sara Sara", flanked by a pair of oval vignettes. The classical theme is continued with the bold design of anthemion and palmettes. The boldly modelled handle is formed as a writhing snake about to strike a butterfly perched on the hinged cover.
It is marked on the base and under the spout. It also bears the British design registry mark for 1854, It weighs 804 grams
An identical example sold at Sothebys as part of lot #255 in the jeweler’s eye: The personal collection of Fred Leighton 18 April 2018, New York
