This American water-colorist shows here his light touch and skillful handling of his medium. This painting dates from the last half of the 19th century. The treatment of the foliage, the tiny well-drawn figures, carriages, street lights and the misty atmospherics add a drama and mystery to the majestic monument. The Place de L'Etoile, where the Arc is situated, is a wide and alarming traffic circle at the top of the Champs Elysee. It is the largest and most interesting watercolor that we have ever offered by this artist who tends to more bucolic and less lively scenes. His views of Paris are particularly interesting. This painting came from an important local collection made by the Reford family.
