This writing box is of a rather unusual design. Instead of flipping open to reveal a sloped writing surface with suitable compartments the whole front comes off and folds out. Above this and enclosed by the lid there is a pinky/red lined compartment. The lid itself is set with abalone shells and painted with an Italianate landscape. There is a Romantic "Gothik" ruin, there is a gondola like boat with Italian sailors and tiny ladies in hooped skirts. Since this box is probably English we cannot give it the Grand Tour designation but it moves in that direction.
