This large covered ginger jar is of tapering octagonal form. Each panel is ribbed and the whole is freely hand-painted in manganese with extensive bucolic landscapes within stylized floral borders. The cover, which continues the motif, has a charming Fu Dog finial which, unlike the Chinese examples, actually looks like a dog but lacks the ball under his paw. This is a Dutch interpretation of an oriental covered ginger jar. It is in outstanding condition, with a minimum of fritting. We can find no other example in this color which seems to have been mainly used on tiles.
