This charming treatment shows a girl of perhaps seven or eight sheltering from the rain under a large umbrella. Chiparus is celebrated for his exciting exotic dancers in bronze and ivory. Here he shows a tenderness and regard for a more quotidian subject. With her ruckled socks, shorts, knocked knees, crouching stance and winning smile she is evocative of childhood at its best, uncomplicated and natural. It is signed D H Chiparus on the umbrella.
The Bronze figure is mounted on a Victorian marble square base with bronze feet and ornaments. The base is slate and seems earlier than the figure.
