Valentino Besarel 1829-1902 is the craftsman responsible for this outstanding "Fantasy" piece. On a simulated bamboo X frame, with carved rope lashings, is set the amusing scene of a child pulling a draped and ruched canopy covering the shaped rectangular seat. The carver has skillfully imitated the ruckles in the fabric and added incised carvings of delicate trailing wild flowers. The child grasping the cover has an upturned face, as if greeting the next sitter.

This stool really demonstrates how a true artist can say something new in an old form. Though a work of art, it is entirely possible to sit on this. Despite early poverty and handicap Besarel’s exceptional talent was recognized in his own time. He evidently received important commissions for his whimsical work.
